Property Modelling

Students in the Design SuiteThis research involves the development of modelling approaches aimed at elucidating structure-property relationships and extends from atomistic simulations through to continuum models. Models of plasticity and fracture toughness in multilayer coatings with individual layers of nanometre thickness have been used to study the in-service failure modes of commercial solar-control coatings.

Models for stress generation and relaxation have resulted in the construction of an improved device for the measurement of residual strain in semiconductor metallisation. Simulations of defects in infra-red detectors have also been used to develop longer wavelength devices.
