Project:

Development of enzymatic biofuel cells for implantable devices

From January 2006 to December 2009

Sponsors: EPSRC

The aim of this project is to research and develop a biofuel cell system which provides power for implantable devices.

In this research, a miniaturised biofuel cell, using glucose/oxygen, where the biocatalytic anode and cathode are immersed in the same phase with no separating membrane will be developed. Modified electrodes with immobilisation of enzymes and mediators to achieve the optimum electrode performance on both anode and cathode will be investigated. Integrated design of a miniaturised implantable biofuel cells will be finalised based on the fundamental studies.
