About the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences is the largest and best equipped group of its type in the UK with 160 staff and 670 students. We have six programme groups which specialise in: Water Resource Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transport Engineering, Geotechnical and Structural Engineering, Geoscience and Geomatics. We carry out world class research focusing on the challenges of science and engineering at the interface between technological, human and natural systems. We command a unique position both to tackle the fundamental science related to intensifying global change and to confront the challenges this presents to our society and its supporting infrastructure.

We offer undergraduate civil engineering degree programmes which cover the core elements essential for any practising civil engineer and allow our graduates to specialise in the aspects of the subject that interest them most. We offer a unique combination of geomatics programmes which cover the core elements essential for professionals working in the geomatics industry: surveying, mapping, positioning, remote sensing and GIS, whilst our physical geography degree offers modules from both geomatics and geography.

At postgraduate level we offer both taught and research degrees with an integrated suite of 18 Masters programmes blending key academic skills with industrial relevance. Many programmes have variants enabling the study of management, consultancy and enterprise skills with the main specialism. Programmes can be studied full time or in a wide range of flexible modes - including some elements by distance learning. The majority of modules within programmes are taught in a block mode easing the problems of part time study and making them available as CPD for those in industry.

We have a large group of postgraduate research students working under the supervision of our experienced academics. Their individual and original research projects are aligned with our major funded research hence they are often in collaboration with other researchers in academia or industry throughout the world.

The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences is ranked 11th for Civil Engineering in the 2015 Guardian University Guide.
