A group of 20 Civil Engineering undergraduate students recently visited the building of a new 15 000 tonne offshore oil platform at Hadrian Yard on the River Tyne. Hosted by Offshore Group Newcastle, the students saw a new topside, jacket and connecting bridge under construction.
Rebecca McAllister, a second year MEng Civil Engineering, student noted that that visit would encourage her to explore how structural engineering fits in with the offshore industry. Tom Pepper, who organised the visit said "This was a very rare opportunity to see all of the constitute parts of an oil platform being built in one place and a great opportunity for the students to see structural engineering on a grand scale."
The site visit was an extra-curricular visit offered by the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and a short video of the visit can be found online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moam4CdZTi8
