photograph Sustainable construction site visits for Stage2 civil engineering

Students from Stage2 Civil Engineering and Civil ND Structural Engineering attended site visits as part of their ‘Design of Sustainable Engineering Systems 2’ module.

A group of students were taken to Edinburgh on Friday 24 February to see the progress with the coveted Edinburgh Tram Project. Students were given access to the control room at the tram depot, based at Gogar.

The same morning they attended a talk on Wave Energy generation at a conference centre on the idyllic Royal Mile in
Edinburgh. The talk was given by Charlie Westerling of Pelamis Wave Power who said “It is exciting to be at the cutting edge of renewable energy and wonderful to speak to such an enthusiastic and interested student group about our work.”

On March 16 another group of students from the same class went to learn about the major refurbishment works at the Primark store on the Northumberland Street, Newcastle. Gary O’Sullivan, the Senior Project Manager at John Sisk & Sons, the principal contractor for the site mentioned that they operate a Zero Harm policy and are proud to divert no less than 95% site waste away from the landfill. Student group were given a guided tour of the various construction and refurbishment works on the multi-storey structure.
