Breaking cholera transmission routes in emergencies: New approaches to wastewater disinfection

Speaker: Professor Huw Taylor, Brighton University

A recent report by a United Nations panel of experts called for all UN installations in emergency settings to treat their own wastewaters onsite.

In this presentation, Emanuele Sozzi and Professor Huw Taylor of the University of Brighton will discuss their work with Médecins Sans Frontières in Haiti to develop a physicochemical wastewater treatment and disinfection process for cholera treatment centres.

Field trials were very successful and 320 cubic metres of wastewaters from cholera patients were effectively treated onsite. Emanuele and Huw are currently working on a laboratory based study to optimise the treatment process so that it can be rolled out for use in other epidemic control programmes.
