School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences

Geomatics staff and students at Newcastle carry out cutting-edge research under two main themes: Geodesy and Geospatial Engineering.

Major projects

We participate in major projects funded predominantly by research councils, industry and government.

Our findings are disseminated in leading international journals and at international conferences and symposia, as well as in professional magazines, the media and through educational outreach programmes.

Geomatics formed a signficant component of the Newcastle University submission to the Civil Engineering Research Assessment Exercise 2008 and was ranked second in the UK by the influential Research Fortnight magazine.

Industry consultants

Our research has significant relevance in non-academic settings. We regularly apply it through consultancy to industry, from the global offshore industry to local authorities and survey and engineering companies.

We are a key part of the Innovate UK (formerly Technology Stretgey Board, TSB) Satellite Applications Catapult North East Centre of Excellence.
