Counselling in Schools

Developing interest and expertise in the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching

As the only university recognised research centre within ECLS, and with numerous researchers and lecturers involved, CfLaT’s research interests are diverse in content and context, though linked by over-arching themes. One research theme which continues to be developed and strengthened, is that of Counselling in Schools, and is led by one CfLaT member, Dr Sue Pattison.

Counselling in schools is historically an under-researched area, mainly qualitative research. However, now nationally counselling is becoming a regulated profession, with the NHS driving powerful evidence-based practice (NICE Guidelines). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has a strong evidence base - other approaches have less – and the nature of evidence differs.

Work by Sue is comprised of several facets:

  • Consultancy work
  • Policy
  • Partnership projects
  • Links with other institutions and organisations
  • Knowledge transfer out and in
  • Charitable trusts
  • Committee work
  • Local - Regional - National - and International.

However, over the years, Sue has worked consistently to build capacity and consolidate her work in this area through a variety of ways:

  • Networking - social and professional
  • Local - regional - national - and international links
  • Committee work
  • Conferences
  • External examining
  • Social networks
  • Research – projects and students
  • Teaching
  • Journal and conference reviewing
  • ESRC reviewing
  • Colleagues and their networks.

Sue collaborates with, and is linked to, several organisations, and she is now a core member of the Counselling in Schools Research Consortium (CSRC). There is a growing interest in counselling in schools across the UK, driven by an increasing awareness of the role that schools can play in helping to promote emotional health for children and young people, and by addressing mental health issues, including psychological and behavioural problems. The Counselling in Schools Research Consortium (CSRC) is a group of counselling and psychotherapy researchers and practitioners who continue to develop research into counselling in schools. The principle aim of CSRC is to support the development of counselling in schools through actively linking research with policy and practice. Sue is also has active links with:
