Notes: This paper characterises language classrooms as a series of inter-related micro-contexts called modes. Instead of viewing classroom discourse as a single context, the focus here is on the ways in which teachers co-construct modes through their choice of language and in relation to their pedagogic goals. This model offers researchers and practitioners a more flexible approach which can accommodate different patterns of interaction, which vary according to teachers’ and students’ goals and backgrounds.
