My background is in Primary teaching, with specialisation in History, Art, PSHE, English and the use of thinking skills approaches.

I am a member of the Primary PGCE team and a tutor on the M.ed Practitioner Enquiry M.Ed.
I am research- active and an Associate member of the Centre for Learning and Teaching.
I am the Environmental Coordinator for ECLS

Research Interests

My main research interest is in the field of dialogic and 'Thinking Skills' education, and in particular in the use of the Community of Enquiry/ Philosophy for Children.
Another interest is Creativity in Primary Education, and Curriculum Innovation.
A third interest is teacher development, both in terms of Initial Teacher Training and of Teacher Professional Development.

I am a registered SAPERE trainer in Philosophy for children (P4C).

£3000 (2000) BPRS Scholarship

£1208 (2005) HASS Faculty small grant to carry out research in the links between thinking Skills education and SATs results in Year 2 and Year 6 in Northumberland.

Undergraduate Teaching

All of my teaching is postgraduate.

Postgraduate Teaching

On the Master’s level Primary PGCE course I lead the Art module, the SAPERE-accredited Philosophy for Children course, and the Curriculum Innovation module. I also contribute to the following modules: Professional Studies; Primary English; Mathematics; Science; the Reflective Practitioner, and the Primary Project.

 

On the M.Ed Practitioner Enquiry Module I teach the 'Innovative curriculum through pupil/student Enquiry' module with Rachel Lofthouse, and I teach a session on teaching thinking skills at Primary schools on the M.Ed ‘Developing Thinking Skills’ Module.
