Sue is Head of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, and a member of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching (CfLAT). Her current research focuses on the internationalization of higher education and its implications for innovative teaching and learning methods, curriculum development, staff development and student support. Sue convenes a Regional University Internationalization Network and the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Research Group within CfLAT. She is co-author (with Yvonne Turner) of Internationalizing the University: an introduction for university teachers and managers, 2008, Continuum Press. She is advisor to a Teacher Training Programme for Burmese Teachers. From 2009-2011 Sue was Co-Director of the North East Regional Centre for LINKS into Languages. She now coordinates the Network for Languages North East.
Sue taught in secondary schools and special education services for 13 years before joining the Special Educational Needs Research Group at Newcastle University in 1995. Sue taught in the Centre for International Studies in Education, University of Newcastle from 1997-2002, and became Director of the Centre in 2001. When the University restructured in 2002 Sue became a Lecturer in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences and Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes. She has designed, developed and taught on postgraduate professional programmes for teachers in Newcastle and Hong Kong. Sue became Head of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences in 2007.
Sue was a member of Senate 2008-2011. She is currently a member of the University Internationalization Executive Group and the Recognising and Rewarding Teaching Steering Group. Sue's role as Head of School involves strategic management of the school, chairing the School Management Group and being a member of the School Research Committee and HASS Faculty Executive Board. Sue also represents Newcastle University on the University Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) Council.
She currently teaches on postgraduate professional development (PPD) programmes in Education and Chairs the Board of Examiners for PPD programmes. Sue supervises research into innovative learning and teaching and the internationalization of higher education. She leads a team from CfLAT who deliver the EQUATE (Equal Acclaim for Teaching Excellence) research and development programme for teaching champions across the University.

Sue's current research interests include:
the internationalization of higher education; Sue's research has explored academic perceptions of the impact of internationalization on professional lives, the student experience, the curriculum, and on learning and teaching. Sue convenes a regional internationalization university network and is a member of Newcastle University’s Internationalization Executive Group
teaching and assessing for successful learning in higher education. Sue is a member of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University. She has developed and evaluated professional development programmes for teachers in Syria, China and the UK and currently leads a team from CfLAT in delivering the EquATE programme - (Equal acclaim for teaching excellence an innovative teaching and learning development programme for university colleagues. She was a member of the research team that reviewed frameworks for effective thinking for the Learning and Skills Research Council (Moseley et al, 2004). Sue co-authored (with Turner) a book on Internationalizing the University, which was published by Continuum in 2008.
From 2002-2004 Sue held a fellowship for internationalization in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Internationalization of Higher Education. Recent research papers have explored the impact of internationalization on staff and student communities in HE and identified support needs for effective internationalization. Successful bids for innovation funding from the University of Newcastle over several years have enabled Sue to initiate a regional network with colleagues from higher education institutions to develop collaborative research and share innovative policies and practices; to develop a programme of intercultural events for students; to investigate international students' perceptions of feedback and to consider how feedback can inform students future work. Sue was a member of the FDTL 5 Project Team 'Developing formative assessment using ICTs in education'.
