Dr Lwin is a graduate of the Centre for International Studies in Education at Newcastle University (MEd, EdD). He has established the Teacher Training Center for Burmese Teachers, a non-profit making organisation based in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. The Center seeks to improve the quality of education in refugee camps, and for internally displaced persons within Burma. The Center provides training for new teachers, professional development opportunities for existing teachers, and develops educational policy and practice. It also provides educational opprtunities for Burmese migrant workers in Thailand.
Dr Lwin was Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow, International Forum for Democratic Studies, in Spring 2007.
Dr Lwin will visit Newcastle in March 2008. He will deliver a research seminar for colleagues and students, and a guest lecture for students, based on his work on education for democracy. Dr Lwin will work with Sue Robson and other members of CfLaT on the development of links between the CfLaT research team and the Prospect Burma Education Project.
The Prospect Burma Education project has four components:
1. Teacher Preparation and Professional Development
2. Education Leadership and School Management
3. Skills Development for Refugees and Migrants
4. Education Policy and Curriculum Development.
The project will be implemented by the Teacher Training Center for Burmese Teachers based in Chiang Mai, Thailand for three years commencing in January 2008. Sue Robson, Head of School, ECLS, is an adviser to the project.
The intention is to work towards a bid for external funding to evaluate the Teacher Preparation and Professional Development element of the Prospect Burma Education project and to plan a co-authored publication.
