This research programme is a case study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of an integrated approach to therapy that utilises strategic and self regulated learning techniques on primary aged children attending a clinic. A well established clinic will act as the case study for this project. Children who attend the clinic have crucial features that are typical of poor learners in literacy. It is hypothesised that a practical application of strategy implementation and self regulated learning that is related to a metacognitive approach to therapy will result in positive gains in reading, writing and spelling skills of low achieving literacy learners.
The participants will be primary school aged children who attend the clinic. All children will have been referred privately by a parent or other professional who have expressed concerns about the child’s literacy skills. Each participant will have confirmed reading, writing, spelling and/or phonological processing difficulties which may or may not co-exist with speech and language difficulties.
Progress for children within the clinic will involve a multi-modal fine grained analysis of data collected.
