The first award is part of the NIHR SEED programme (Supporting Excellence in End of life care in Dementia) providing £1.92 million over five years and bringing together key national researchers in the field to to look at the quality of care for dementia sufferers and identify areas of good practice.
Louise Robinson, Professor of Primary Care and Ageing at Newcastle is the lead for the SEED programme says "it is great that of only four programme grants were awarded nationally, two are being led by Newcastle."
The second grant, led by Professor John O'Brien will be look at improving diagnosis and management of people with Lewy body dementia.
