The 2013 public Wynne–Jones lecture is to be given by Professor Carolyn Bertozzi, the T.Z. and Irmgard Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, berkeley. Her lecture is entitled Bioorthogonal Chemistry, An Enabling Tool for Biology and Drug Development. Further information about the Wynne–Jones Lecture is available here.

NE Industry-Academia Collaboration Meeting
NEPIC(The North East Process Industry Cluster) organised a one day symposium between its members and the Chemistry Departments at Newcastle, Durham, York and Leeds Universities who are working together with the aim of collaborating in the area of sustainable chemistry and providing research expertise to Companies in the Region. The meeting took place at Ramside Hall, Durham on the 24th April.

RSC Chemical Nanoscience Spring Symposium
The third one-day RSC Chemical Nanoscience Spring Symposium was held in Newcastle in March 2013. The event had an exciting line of speakers presenting on a wide range of topics in Chemical Nanoscience. A poster session with prizes was held during lunch so students and researchers could actively contribute to the day.

Major Investment in Physical Chemistry Laboratories
As part of the Universities commitment to provide state of the art facilities to its students, work on the refurbishment of the physical chemistry undergraduate teaching laboratory has now been completed. The old laboratory, on the second floor of Bedson building has been completely stripped out and has been replaced with modern services, flooring, benching and IT connectivity. This modern facility provides bench space for approximately 70 students and completes the transformation of the School of Chemistry’s undergraduate teaching laboratories, which have in the last 5 years undergone complete modernisation at a cost of approximately £2 million. The new laboratory was completed on schedule in time for the new intake of students in 2011/2012. A photo gallery of of the official opening is available here. By clicking this link to bring up the 3D Tour, you can view the exceptional standard of laboratories that is used for all our practical teaching classes.
