This subject taster session is your chance to find out more about Chemistry and experience what it’s like to study at university. You will experience what it’s like to attend a lecture or seminar and gain hands-on practical experience! We have tried to make sure that there are a variety of subjects covered and that the sessions are as interactive as possible.
Many of the critical issues facing our world today can only be tackled with the input of cutting-edge chemistry. Find out what these issues are and what today’s chemists are doing to help:
The Chemistry of Smells – Flavours and Fragrances - Dr Michael Hall

Chemistry plays a major role in both the development and production of fragrances and flavours for the food and cosmetic industries. This session will give you the chance to synthesis your own fragrance compounds, examine their physical properties (including smell) and use both this and infra-red spectroscopy to identify what you have made.
Chemistry of the Senses & What's it Like to Study Chemistry at Newcastle? - Dr Peter Hoare

This session will consist of a demonstration lecture entitled "Chemistry of the Senses", originally written and delivered by Dr Hoare and Dr Lee Higham for the Open University 6th form Christmas lectures in December 2009. This will be followed by a presentation on the chemistry degree options available at Newcastle University, including discussion of the wide range of possible career options open to anyone with a chemistry degree - some obvious, but others are a little more surprising!
Kinetics – an Oscillating Chemical Reaction - Dr David Fulton

An understanding of kinetics is fundamental to chemists being able to tailor reactions to specific requirements. In this session you’ll investigate the kinetics of a very unusual chemical reaction and thus learn more about transition metals, their variable oxidation states and chemical equilibria. You’ll also find out how knowledge of kinetics enables chemists to control both chemical and biological processes.
