Chemistry Discover Day (formerly known as Masterclasses)

Annual event - taking place on Saturday 9th March 2013

For the past few years we have run a Masterclass for gifted and talented students in Year 11, which was supported by AimHigher funding. Now this has ceased, the University has rebranded them as Discover Days, but run along similar lines.

For the Chemistry Discover Day, in our state-of-the-art undergraduate synthetic laboratory, pairs of students will make and purify an ester, which is an essential ingredient as a flavouring in sweets and other confectionary products. This will introduce you to many experimental techniques not encountered or available at school. It will also give you an idea of what it's like to study Chemistry at A-level and beyond.

The lab work will be complemented by our "Chemistry of the Senses" demonstration lecture, a presentation on potential careers with a university chemistry qualification and a tour of the facilities in the School of Chemistry guided by current chemistry undergraduate students, many of whom attended schools in the region.

Numbers are limited but you no longer need your school to nominate you - students may now book their places directly for this event, which is FREE to attend.

See the Discover Days website for more information and details of how to book places.
