Chemistry Masterclass

Annual event - took place on Saturday 5th March 2011

Each year, we run a Masterclass for gifted and talented students in Year 11. Over the course of a day, in our state-of-the-art undergraduate synthetic laboratory, pairs of students will make and purify an ester, which is an essential ingredient as a flavouring in sweets and other confectionary products. This will introduce you to many experimental techniques not encountered or available at school. It will also give you an idea of what it's like to study Chemistry at A-level and beyond.

The lab work will be complemented by our "Chemistry of the Senses" demonstration lecture, a presentation on potential careers with a university chemistry qualification and a tour of the facilities in the School of Chemistry.

Numbers are limited and your school must nominate you to attend, so contact your Head of Year or AimHigher Coordinator if you are interested.

See the Masterclasses website for more information and details of how to book places.

For most state schools, funding is provided by your LEA’s AimHigher scheme – see this webpage for details of each LEA’s policy and contacts.

N.B. Please note that these websites refer to this years Masterclasses and are NOT a statement of intent about the availability and funding for next year.
