A-level Revision Workshops

Annual event - now held around Easter each year - booking now available!

These workshops were instigated by Dr Peter Hoare during his RSC School Teacher Fellowship year in 2008-09 and have been repeated in each academic year since. They continue to prove popular with a variety of schools and colleges across the region.

They are offered for both AS and A2 Chemistry, tailored to fit the two most common A-level Chemistry specifications studied in North-East schools, namely AQA and OCR A - separate A2 workshops were offered for AQA and OCR A at A2 level, as the distribution of topics between the two A2 modules of each Board are significantly different.

Please note that individual modules as above will still be available to be delivered in schools/colleges, but the on campus workshops will now be generic AS and A2 workshops, each covering selected topics from the whole of each year - they will also be 1 hour longer than previously - running between 10.00am and 4.00pm each day with a 1 hour break for lunch. Flyers and provisional content may be viewed here for AS and here for A2.

Each workshop now consists of two 2.5 hour interactive revision sessions with a 1 hour lunch break between them. Each session consists of a short summary of the key points and typical student misconceptions from each selected topic area, followed by a variety of on-screen questions which the students answer using electronic voting handsets - hence the "interactive". Each student is also provided with a revision booklet containing a comprehensive set of revision notes covering all topics for each year, not just the ones covered in each workshop.

The dates for the Easter 2014 Revision Workshops are detailed below and the online booking form may be accessed here. This information has also been advertised by e-mail to all our schools/colleges contacts. Venue will be either Lecture Theatre 3 (1st floor) or Lecture Theatre 1 (ground floor) in the Bedson Building, depending on total numbers booked for each workshop.

Tuesday 1st April - A2 workshop; 10.00am - 4.00pm; venue Lecture Theatre 3, 1st floor, Bedson Building.

Friday 4th April - AS workshop; 10.00am - 4.00pm; venue Lecture Theatre 3, 1st floor, Bedson Building.

As previous years, these workshops will be repeated in the first week of most schools Easter holidays:

Monday 7th April - A2 workshop; 10.00am - 4.00pm; venue to be confirmed in the Bedson Building.

Wednesday 9th April - AS workshop; 10.00am - 4.00pm; venue to be confirmed in the Bedson Building.

As with previous workshops, there will be a charge of £10 per student, which includes a comprehensive revision notes booklet. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to provide lunch in the University Bistro - the main shopping area in Newcastle city centre is only a few minutes walk away from our campus with a large range of shops and other outlets where food may be purchased.

Please click here for a campus map and directions to the University - the entrance to the Bedson Building is no. 20 on the map (on Edwards Walk) and the lecture theatre venue will be signposted from the main entrance.

Thanks to continued support from RSC ChemNet this year, we are able to offer a fixed number of places at the on campus workshops FREE to ChemNet members - first come, first served but only one free workshop per member please to ensure as many eligible students can benefit from this - you will need to provide your membership number when you book (as an individual) or for schools/colleges teachers will need to supply these details for a group booking which includes ChemNet members - the booking form now has an upload file facility to provide a list of students and their ChemNet membership numbers.
