This presentation was designed by Anne Willis and Peter Hoare as a collaborative project in Spring 2009 as part of their RSC School Teacher Fellowships at Northumbria and Newcastle Universities respectively.
It is designed to raise both awareness of Chemistry and potential careers in Chemistry through the idea that Chemistry is involved in everything around us, in this case the contents of your supermarket shopping basket!
It was aimed originally at students in years 5 - 8, but since its first presentation in April 2009 has been successfully delivered, in various forms, to over 9,000 students from reception to year 13 in many local infant, primary, junior, middle and high schools, as well as on campus in both universities.
It has also been presented at Alnwick Gardens, Centre for Life, Hexham Racecourse, Metro Centre, The Riverside (Durham CCC), the Brainwave Science event at NetPark and even in a marquee at a County Durham Scout Camp! It has also been presented in the School of Chemistry at Bristol University as part of a primary science project day and it has also been adopted by the "Alchemists" - postgraduate chemistry students at Oxford University - as one of their outreach activities.
