The Outreach Laboratory provides young people with access to a university standard laboratory complete with experimental and analytical facilities. Research by the Royal Society of Chemistry has shown that access to high quality laboratory facilities has a positive impact on young people's chemistry knowledge and skills along with their understanding of the relevance and application of chemistry.
The Laboratory provides facilities that are not normally available to schools. For many secondary schools, a well equipped laboratory is prohibitively expensive and the new Outreach Laboratory will allow many more pupils to conduct interesting and inspiring experiments.
The laboratory will be used for practical sessions where schools can either choose from a bank of standard experiments or undertake their own. It will allow them to carry out A-level assessed practical coursework. In addition, taster days, Masterclasses and Continuing Professional Development events for teachers will also be held.
The new laboratory provides space for up to 14 students to work individually or in pairs and includes many facilities not normally available in schools. It also has an adjacent dedicated multimedia teaching space with an interactive SMART board, PCs and networked colour printer thereby doubling the number of students that can be accommodated at any one time.
