The Synthetic and Medicinal Group brings together inorganic, organic and medicinal chemists with complementary expertise to tackle challenging problems in the areas of catalysis, lanthanide, transition and main group chemistry, synthetic methodology development, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. The work of the group ranges from exploratory and targeted synthetic chemistry to mechanistic studies and the development of new catalysts and drugs. Close collaborations exist with the Northern Institute for Cancer Research, the University Research Centre in Catalysis and Intensified Processing, marineNewcastle, and other Schools and Departments across SAgE and Medicine. Investigation (by a variety of physicochemical methods) of highly unusual, air-stable, chiral primary phosphines and their use as ligand precursors for asymmetric catalysis.

Design and synthesis of chiral catalysts and their applications to the asymmetric synthesis of organic targets.

Crystal Engineering of rare earth complexes; in particular understanding of the occurrence of polymorphism as well as the influence of intermolecular interactions on materials properties. Development of a new approach for a solvent-free design of lanthanide containing 3D networks.
