Study Abroad & Work Placements

Study Abroad and Work Placement Modules

We've developed three kinds of one-year intercalating stages for Combined Honours students who are not taking a foreign language.

Key facts

All three modules below are taken between Stages 2 and 3 of academic study.

If you're not already taking an intercalating stage through a language subject, you can choose to take one of the below Study Abroad or Work Placement modules.

Expressing an interest

At the end of Stage 1, students will receive a call for expression of interest in taking one of these modules.

It will not commit you to anything, but will allow the team to invite you to briefings and preparation workshops if you choose to take one of the modules after Stage 2.

All three modules are assessed (with feedback) on a pass/fail basis and don't contribute a mark to your final degree classification.

Valuable experience

However, they will be mentioned on your degree certificate, flagging up to potential employers that you have gained this extra experience through your degree.

For all modules, there will be the opportunity to reflect on and talk about your experiences to existing students when you return to Stage 3. In addition, this intercalating year opens up further opportunities for representation and mentoring in your final year.

Study Abroad (HSS3011)

This module allows you to study your degree subjects abroad for a full academic year between Stages 2 and 3. This is through one of our many partner universities in Europe or further afield.

This makes your degree four years long.

Work Placement (HSS3010)

This module allows you to work for a full academic year either in the UK or abroad between Stages 2 and 3. You need to seek your own work placement.

This will make your degree four years long.

The work placement is assessed throughout (with feedback) through a reflective blog using ePortfolio. You'll receive a full programme of training through the second year of your degree.

All Stage 1 students will receive a call for expression of interest in the module at the end of the academic year.

Work Placement and Study Abroad (HSS3009)

It is also possible to divide your year between both a work placement and study abroad.
