Why do employers want Combined Honours Students?

Combined Honours graduates seem to do particularly well in the employment market, as has been shown by graduate destination surveys in recent years. This might come as a surprise to those who think that student do CH because they cannot make up their minds!
One reason for this is that because CH students tend to study subjects they really enjoy and because this gives them both variety and challenge, that they do exceptionally well in terms of degree outcomes. Over 95% of CH Graduates got a 2.1 or better in 2013 and over 30% gained a first.
However the main reason is due to high quality of graduate attributes that are developed through the degree. The  fact that students have a broader curriculum and need to contend with at least two, often very different subjects at once, produces graduates that are:

  1. Versatile and adaptable
  2. Autonomous and independent – and who make their own decisions
  3. Good at multi-tasking and meeting deadlines
  4. Flexible and open to new ideas
  5. Creative and innovative in their thinking
  6. Strong at problem solving and making connections

So studying multiples subjects offers a both a broad and deep understanding and develops a reflective and critical approach rather more successfully than focussing on one narrow area. However don’t forget to try to take advantage of all the other great opportunities to engage in activities outside the degree. Find out more about enhancing your graduateness. In particular we encourage you to do the CH Graduate Development modules at the same time as being a rep or a mentor , or any other role that involves you more with Combined.
