History

This subject is offered by the School of Historical Studies.

Subject summary

We encourage students to take a broad and inclusive view of history. Our first-year modules, Encounters in World History and Identities in World History, go beyond human history to include the history of the environment and even of the universe. The curriculum for Single Honours History is designed to introduce students to History as the study of humankind's experiences in the past - throughout time and across the planet - and also to more specialised knowledge of particular times, places and themes.

The curriculum is structured to enable students to make informed choices about the particular times and places they choose as options. It progresses from a greater towards a lesser number of compulsory modules (each containing within them an element of choice) in each Stage, and from broader (chronologically and geographically) towards narrower modules in each Stage.

It is this curriculum structure, and in particular its foundation in world history, that makes our History offering distinctive.

Pre-requisites

A Level History (or equivalent) is normally required.
