Subject summary

Preliminary Studies in Art History

This is an introductory course comprising of two modules in the first two semesters during the first year. Preliminary Studies I focuses on certain key developments in the history of art, during the period from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century and introduces a variety of methods and approaches to the subject.

The aim is to broaden and deepen existing knowledge and to develop conceptual tools and analytic skills in relation to the interpretation of art. In some instances the focus is on single works or art, in others, a body of work, in relation to their historical and theoretical context. Through seminars and the writing of essays, students are also encouraged to pursue independent research into areas of their own choice.

In the second semester the focus is on the development of Modernism from the late nineteenth century through to the onset of the Second World War and a key aspect is developing awareness of artists’ writings and related theory.

Pre-requisites

In preparation for these courses students are advised to make visits to local museums and galleries, and, where possible, to national collections. This will assist in developing visual knowledge and experience. Visits should be complemented by reading from related appropriate literature (books, catalogues, periodicals) to enhance understanding of the historical, critical and theoretical dimensions of Art History.

The modules offer an introduction to Art Historical approaches and methodologies covering a range of periods, movements and iconographies and setting works into their creative, cultural and historical contexts. A-Levels in Art, Art History, History, English, or a Language are desirable.
