Newcastle University to offer full scholarships

Teachers have praised Newcastle dons’ pledge to support 20 of the most able students from low-income households who have academic potential but would be put off further study by the new higher fees that come into force in 2012. David Pearmain, chair of Schools North East and headteacher of Kenton School, said the Promise Scholarships scheme was “a really worthwhile initiative” as it would be a “tragedy” if some of the region’s brightest students are put off going to university because they feel they can’t afford it.
