Towards Hybrid Neural-Silicon Sensorimotor Systems

Sensorimotor system governs the dynamics of learning and adaptation that enables high performance cognitive and behavioural activities in biological organisms. In parallel with the development in neuroscience, microelectronic technology quickly evolves into a regime that is almost compatible to biological neural systems, in terms of computational power. Hybrid neural-silicon system becomes possible and such system will have profound implications in engineering design, from prosthetics to sensorimotor control that advance human abilities. In this talk, I will outline the major microelectronic design obstacles to build such hybrid sensorimotor systems. New research initiatives and novel design methodologies, including high-performance neural signal processing, power management, and real-time dynamic optimization, along with the direction of hybrid neural-silicon sensorimotor systems will be presented.
