CiC: Further characterisation of Clostridium difficile specific antibodies for translational applications

The overall aim of our research is to apply a novel bioinformatics-workflow system to define unique biomarkers for pathogenic bacteria which, can be utilised in point of care (PoC) sensors. The initial proof of concept of our work has provided a unique biomarker for C. difficile against which, two novel monoclonal antibodies have been produced; we wish to collaborate with R-Biopharm AG and other diagnostic companies in order for them to produce an immunoassay for the diagnosis of C. difficile infection (CDI). For rapid PoC testing, ideally the biomarkers need to be accessible on the surface of whole cells, and whilst initial evidence implies this is the case, further validation studies are needed.
