Internet Techologies and Enterprise Computing, MSc

Course Duration:12 months full time; up to 24 months part time

This is a one-year Masters course which concentrates on theory and practice, and provides students with the flexibility to carry out challenging project work on networked computing either at University or within industry. Suitable for students with a Bachelors degree in computing science, this course prepares graduates to pursue careers as architects or project managers, to undertake basic research or establish their own consulting or software development companies. The course commences in the middle of September and lasts for 12 months. It is possible for students to take the degree part-time over two years. The part-time version of the course is particularly intended to encourage participation of employees from local IT companies.

The internet is an essential part of our infrastructure. Organisations as well as individuals are increasingly using the internet and the web for conducting their activities. These rapid developments have created an acute skill shortage in all areas of IT but particularly for computer scientists capable of designing advanced internet applications, an area where a broad range of skills are necessary on the part of the designers. The newly created advanced MSc in Internet Technologies and Enterprise Computing addresses this skill shortage.

The course is strong on both theory and practice, providing ample scope for students to carry out challenging project work on networked computing either in the University or in industry. A number of leading IT companies are sponsoring the course for project work to be carried out at their industrial R&D laboratories (see below).

The course is approved by the EPSRC and a number of studentships (normally for UK students) are available, including Red Hat sponsored financial assistance.

Why do an MSc in Internet Technologies and Enterprise Computing at Newcastle?

The MSc in Internet Technologies and Enterprise Computing is one of the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The programme is intended to prepare graduates to pursue careers in industry, as software architects and project managers, to establish their own consulting or software development companies, or to undertake basic research in the field.

A unique feature of this degree is the close, long-running cooperation with industry. A number of leading IT companies have been sponsoring the course for project work to be carried out at their industrial R&D laboratories. These companies currently include:

An Industrial Advisory Board composed of these sponsoring companies has been formed to ensure that the technical contents of the course continues to reflect industrial R&D priority areas.
