Each year the University confers a number of Honorary Degrees upon candidates worthy of such distinction. The Honorary Degrees Committee meet annually to review nominations for the award of honorary degrees and once consensus is reached, the Committee submit recommendations to Senate for approval.
The University also awards a number of Honorary Fellowships to candidates who have made an important contribution to the life and success of the University. Court Steering Committee meets annually to review nominations, which are then put forward to Court for further discussion and final decisions.
Dr Martin Luther King has an honorary degree from Newcastle University. We have footage, transcripts and images from the ceremony which took place on 13 November 1967.
