After about ten years as Research Manager in CRE, I took (very) early retirement, and became a PhD student, studying the provision of computing in Community Centres. I had a CASE collaborative PhD studentship, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Derwentside District Council. I completed my doctorate early in 2007 and took up a post as a post-doctoral Research Associate in CRE.
Over the past decade, my
research interests have coalesced around rural development, studying in particular
the information society, microbusinesses, community organisations and governance.
Much of this research has been approached in a participative way such that non-academic
practitioners have played a significant part in shaping the research I have
done.
My current employment is on an EU Framework Programme VI project 'Foresight
Analysis for Rural Areas'. CRE is one of a pan-European team of researchers,
and we have responsibility for leading the strand of work on the governance
of rural areas, and the role of ICTs, which links effectively with my PhD thesis.
