The Centre for Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology (CSBB) is ideally located in the North East of England where a large proportion of the UK’s process industries are based:

  • 58% of the petrochemical Industry
  • 35% of the pharmaceuticals industry
  • A major proportion of the UK’s fine & speciality chemical industry

This sector is the UK’s highest exporter (£31.8bn/pa), with the North East exporting £4.5bn.  It is the North East’s largest industrial sector generating over £10 billion (over 30%) of the region’s GDP and employing over 35,000 people.

The research expertise in the university offers a number of opportunities for partnerships and consultancy including joint applications for funding, access to facilities and consultancy.
