Whilst synthetic biology is already making an impact in many areas the full potential of this approach will not be realised until many research challenges have been met.
Synthetic Biology research can be split broadly into three categories:
- research into new approaches, technologies and tools
- research focused the application of synthetic biology
- research into the ethical, legal and social implications of synthetic biology.
Synthetic biology is a developing field. The CSBB is active in all three of these categories and has established themes that underpin Synthetic Biology research at Newcastle.

The groups in CSBB are involved in a range of projects funded by a number of the major research funders both in the UK and internationally.
