About Us

Culture Lab was founded in May 2006 to provide a central hub for a range of creative activities within the University and the wider region. Culture Lab is both a physical building and a group of collaborators in the field of creative practice. It is home to a core group of permanent staff, led by Culture Lab's Director Professor Atau Tanaka, who teach and provide administrative support for the degree programmes housed there. There are also many individuals and research groups who base themselves at Culture Lab and make use of the extensive facilities while working on their individual projects.

Set in the Grade II Listed Grand Assembly Rooms next to the main entrance to the University campus, Culture Lab houses magnificently refurbished open-plan research spaces. We are very lucky to have various cutting edge facilities such as motion capture equipment, a large flexible performance space, and dedicated electronics, workshop, multimedia, film and sound spaces.

Although its residents come from across all three of the University's Faculties, Culture Lab is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Its physical position, on the edge of the campus near the main University entrance on Barras Bridge close to the Northern Stage theatre and the Great North Museum, enables it to contribute to the varied offer of public cultural activities based in this area of the University campus.
