Volcano The Bear have, in the words of The Wire, "produced some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record and on stage…”. Or, as Losing Today puts it, “No one sounds, has sounded or will ever sound quite like Volcano the Bear.”
A calculatedly hysterical melting pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and Albert Ayler, seen through a prism of occasionally theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces, VTB so excited Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, 'The Inhazer Decline', in 2000.
Since then, they've graced such labels as Beta Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl, even NO-FI with their peerless product.
Volcano The Bear:
Volcano the Bear was formed in May 1995 by Daniel Padden, Laurence Coleman, Nick Mott and Aaron Moore. These four musicians encountered frustrations with the limitations of traditional musical endeavors and sought an outlet that could defy convention. Volcano the Bear quickly became the platform for their total artistic freedom and personal expression, where they could explore collective ideas and interests in a new and inventive manner.
Cissy:
Canopy first brought this Leeds based quartet up to perform at the NARC/Ouseburn Festival (2009) after seeing them support Das Boton on their UK tour. And their Afro-Cuban rhythms paired with riotous Post-Punk energy went down a treat. So here they are again! Don't miss them.
Falco Subutteo:
This duo have been regulars of Canopy for some years now, first appearing at 'Flipside' at The Side Cinema for an improvised music session. Always a joy to watch - Gwilly's lo-fi electronics and inimitable vocal style; Val's improvised violin melodies and textures; what's not to love?!
Urban Geisha:
This lady is probably the best performance DJ in town. Seamlessly mixing a concoction of beats whilst slyly inserting her own vocal excerpts and synth lines, she's here to keep the night rolling. I'll eat my own hat if you don't end up tapping your toes!
