24^th September saw Professor John Goddard, CURDS, address a fringe event at the Labour Party conference, hosted by Newcastle University and the Newcastle Institute for Social Renewal. The event, "The University and the City: how Labour can help universities form strong relationships with local communities", involved Professor Mark Shucksmith OBE (NISR), Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central (chair), Gordon Marsden MP, Shadow Minister for Further Education and Shabana Mahmood MP, Shadow Minister for Universities and Science.

Following his presentation, the panel discussion explored John’s idea of universities as ‘anchor institutions’ that have significant importance to the economy and wider community life of the cities in which they are based.  Here is further information about the Universities and local and regional development research agenda.
