During the course of the current academic year, John Dersley will utilise his extensive experience of Government (as an ex-DTI and GO-NE civil servant), of the University (as its Director of Regional Development) and wider regional and innovation policy contexts (as consultant to the Science Cities Consortium).

The new £2.4m national Spatial Economics Research Centre (SERC) was given its Northern Launch on Monday 17 November 2008 at Newcastle University. SERC is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Communities and Local and Government and the Welsh Assembly Government. SERC is led by the LSE with partners including CURDS at Newcastle University and others in Glasgow, Oxford and Swansea. The Centre's primary aim is to provide a rigorous understanding of the nature, extent, causes and consequences of spatial disparities, and identifying appropriate policy responses.
