CURDS is a partner in the STELLA network, a thematic network supported by the European Union's Fifth Framework Programme. STELLA is the acronym for Sustainable Transport in Europe and Links and Liaisons with America, and is concerned with common issues in Transatlantic transport research. The network commenced in January 2002, and runs for three years.

The work of the network is organised into five themes, which have been identified as critical fields of interest for Transatlantic transportation research. The themes are (1) Globalisation, E-economy and Trade; (2) ICT, Innovation and the Transport System; (3) Society, Behaviour and Private/Public Transport; (4) Environment, Safety, Health, Land Use and Congestion; and (5) Institutions, Regulation and Markets in Transportation.

Each of the themes is being addressed by a Focus Group, which organise workshops around a series of position papers developed through the network. Professor Andy Gillespie of CURDS is the European co-ordinator of Focus Group 2, with Professor Don Janelle of the University of California at Santa Barbara as his North American counterpart. The Focus Group seeks to perform a comparative North American and European analysis of the ways in which information and communications technologies (ICTs) are intersecting with new ways of living and working within metropolitan regions, creating a complex mix of travel substituting, enhancing and generating effects.

The first Focus Group 2 workshop took place in Arlington, Virginia in January 2002, and the second takes place in Newcastle in May 2003. Further information on the activities of the Focus Group and of the STELLA network as a whole can be found on the project's website at http://www.stellaproject.org.
