Info for Staff

Data Protection Information for Staff

Newcastle University is committed to protecting the rights and privacy of individuals in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Our business requires that we process certain information about staff, students and other individuals with whom we have dealings - we do this for our own administrative purposes and to comply with our obligations (e.g. to funding bodies). To comply with the law however, we have to be open about how personal information is used and must also follow the eight data protection principles of good information handling.

All members of University staff have certain responsibilities under our Data Protection Policy to:

  • be aware of the Data Protection Act and what it means to the University
  • follow the policy and procedures for handling personal data
  • consult with the Information Security Officer (Compliance) for advice and guidance when necessary

See our Data Protection Guidance for Staff on the basics of the Data Protection Act, along with some more detailed guidance.

Higher Education Statistics Agency

Every year, we send some of the data we hold about you to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). For more information on the data that is shared with HESA, and what they will use it for, see the Staff Collection Notice on HESA's website.
