Introduction

I received my BDS at the University of Edinburgh before returning to my native north-east to undertake junior hospital and university appointments followed by 3 years as an Associate in general dental practice.
Returning to the University at Newcastle as a Clinical Research Associate I completed my PhD in 1992 with a study of the dental effects of the use of sugars-containing medication in chronically sick children. Initially as a Lecturer and since 2003 as a Senior Lecturer in Child Dental Health as well as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry, I have an active research interest in fluorides, particularly fluoride exposure, alternative sweeteners and the prevention of dental disease.
