Dental Materials Science
Statistics and data interpretation
Properties of materials:
Development of methodology for in-vitro assessment and the use of these methods for materials development. Methods for prediction of durability. Collaborating with UK and overseas industry and UK and overseas academia.
Interfaces:
Study of interfaces between dental materials and tooth substance and to gain understanding of the mechanisms of adhesion. Emphasis on bonding in Orthodontics and in bonding of restorative materials to enamel and dentine.
Mechanical properties and durability: Relationships between mechanical properties of materials and clinical performance.
Rheology: Influence of setting characteristics and elastic/viscoelatic properties on clinical performance.
Ion exchange and release with particular emphasis on fluoride and calcium and the 'smart' behaviour of materials.
Clinical performance:
Studies of clinical performance and mechanisms of failure through controlled clinical trials.
Convene activities of Biomaterials Research, co-ordinate research programmes in dental materials for the MSc and PhD programmes
Typically responsible for a team of 4 masters and 7 doctoral students
Wilmer Souder Award (1998).
Member of RAE panel (Dentistry) on three occasions.
Since 1999 over £350k from various sources including UK government, NHS, UK industry and overseas industry.
Collaborate with UK and overseas industry on materials development and evaluation.
Teaching to dental undergraduates through lecture programme and practical course.
Teaching to MSc students on taught courses in Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
