Professor Nick Girdler leads a team of highly experienced and motivated teachers. The clinical experience of teachers is underpinned by an extensive portfolio of research in sedation techniques and pharmacology.
This one year part-time programme has been designed to provide qualified dental practitioners with masters level education and training in the theoretical principles and clinical practice of sedation. This is to enable them to undertake the safe independent practice of conscious sedation for dentistry.
The programme has an excellent reputation and is considered to be the 'gold standard' in sedation training. Previous postgraduate students have come from the general, community and hospital dental services from all over the UK and Ireland.
Students undertake substantive self-directed study, including three written assignments, an oral presentation and an audit project leading to the production of a dissertation. The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a final examination at the end of the course.
Clinical training is held in the state of the art Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital, which is fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation. Students learn how to become an operator-sedationist on a wide range of patients including adult dental phobics and anxious children. Students also undertake sessions in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of Sunderland Royal Hospital where you gain experience of sedating patients undergoing surgical procedures.
