Syllabus
The curriculum consists of 12 sections, each having specific aims and objectives, which are taught using a range of methods including lectures, seminars, clinical instruction and a substantial amount of self-directed learning:
- Section 1 - Basis sciences and pharmacology
- Section 2 - Anxiety and pain
- Sections 3/4 - Intravenous sedation
- Sections 5/6 - Inhalational sedation
- Sections 7/8 - Sedation patient care
- Section 9 - Medical emergencies
- Sections 10-12 - Project and dissertation

Knowledge and skills outcomes
Although the course is based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the Northern Region.
The aim of the project and dissertation is to expose students to the principles and practicalities of undertaking a clinical audit project on a topic relating to anxiety or pain control in dentistry which will culminate in the production of a 6,000 word dissertation.
Assessment
The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a two part assessment as follows:-
- Part I (in-course assessment) consists of three written assignments of 2000 words each, two multiple choice question papers and one oral presentation. Students also have to undertake clinical assessment consisting of 14 clinical sessions with the submission of a reflective portfolio of clinical practice and two structured clinical operative tests. The in-course assessment is spaced evenly throughout the twelve month period. Students must pass the Part I assessment to be eligible to sit Part II.
- Part II (final examination) consists of one written and three viva voce components. Each section of the final examination carries an equal weighting of marks and students have to pass every section to pass the final examination.
Attendance
The programme is part-time with students attending nine study days over a twelve month period. In addition students have to attend fourteen half day clinical sessions.
