About the event

Our 3 Speakers are Professor Dame Julia Higgins, Dr Helen Arthur and Dr Katarina Novakovic from a range of fascinating science backgrounds and interesting career experiences. They will give us some insight into their career paths and what influenced the decisions they took. They will also give us some points for discussion on the issues around attracting and retaining women in the various fields of science.

All welcome – you don't have to be a scientist. Postgraduate students interested in a career in science are welcome.

Previous Career Development Events with Resources

• "Know-who" – make the most of networking opportunities" July 2009, networking skills by Caroline Theobold of the Bridge Club.

• "Effective Career Support at Work" October 2009 - Wendy Hirsh, an Applied Researcher and Consultant, described that most effective career support events were likely to be discussions or conversations with people who could help rather than more in more formal settings with a manager.

• "What works for women" was a talk by Dorothy Bishop on International Women's Day March 2010. Her presentation was based on psychological research into "gender schemas" and their influence on why women's progress in academic careers is slower than men's.

• "Networking our Network" in June 2010, was a Network meeting where members had some practice on how to start and continue conversations with people they did not know.

• The Staff Development Unit organised a session in November 2010 about the range of staff development opportunities available to staff with different roles and responsibilities.

• "Winning Women" - Public Lecture International Women's Day 2011. Speakers- Theresa Graham, Jane Nolan and Rebecca Howard. Introduced by Professor Vicki Bruce, Chair of the Diversity Committee, the speakers were former graduates of the University who have been successful in their careers in different ways who could share ideas and experiences in an informative and humorous way.

• "Becoming your own Career Coach". Sue O'Boyle May 2011 - provided this participative and thought provoking session helping participants to explore organisational changes, personal psychological contracts, career anchors, a simple framework for reviewing the complex elements that influence individual career choices and development tools and exercises available to assist with career development discussions.
