This lab provides a computer-based centre for transcription and analysis of recorded samples of language and for teaching.
ECLS has an international reputation for its research into the analysis of normal and disordered language produced in everyday contexts. The lab adds a new dimension to this research by automating tasks that are labour-intensive and time-consuming. It is used not only for research, but also for training students in new computer-assisted technologies. Students are able to use the lab while on clinical placements in assessing patients and evaluating treatment progress.
The lab has twelve PC workstations connected to the campus network, the internet, and the School server. Networked printing is also available.
Transcription facilities – Students are able to playback audio and video. The combination of computer, transcription facilities and quiet environment reduces significantly the amount of time required to do transcription.
Analysis Facilities - Once a transcript is on the computer, it can be analysed in a number of different ways. Various software applications are available, including:
Samples of both spoken and written language can be examined at any linguistic level: lexical, morphological, syntactic, discourse or phonological.
Teaching Facilities – each workstation also allows a student to record their own speech samples for analysis practice. The lab is equipped with Smart Board and Data projection.
