Speech and Language Sciences
Speech and Language Sciences at Newcastle University is one of the leading teaching and research units in the UK devoted to the study of normal communicative processes and communication disorders in children and adults.
Teaching
Newcastle was the first university in the UK to award a degree in Speech and Language Therapy (1967) and continues to be one of the UK’s leading SLT training programmes. We offer two degree programmes that lead to a qualification as a Speech and Language Therapist:
BSc (Hons) Speech & Language Sciences (4 years, full-time)
MSc Language Pathology (2 years, full-time)
These programmes are recognised by the UK’s Health Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. These programmes were awarded the highest grade possible in several recent external reviews of teaching.
In the 2009 National Student Survey, BSc in Speech and Language Sciences received the highest ratings of all the SLT courses in the country with an overall satisfaction score of 100%
Research
Our research involves the study of normal and impaired human communication processes, assessment and intervention for individuals with communication disorders, and sociolinguistics, the RAE 2008 can be found here. Many staff are members of larger collaborative research groups within the university, including the Centre for Research in Language and Language Sciences and the Institute of Health and Society. We also collaborate with researchers throughout the UK and abroad (Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand).
We offer three postgraduate degree programmes in research training:

Clinics and Labs 
There are three on-site clinics that provide assessment and intervention services to adults and children with communication difficulties: the North East Aphasia Centre, The Literacy Clinic and The Paediatric Speech & Language Clinic. These facilities also provide clinical placements for our students and a research facility for students and staff. We have a Language Analysis Lab devoted to clinical linguistic and phonetic analysis, in addition to other facilities.
Conferences
This year the Child Language Seminar 2011 will be held at Newcastle University, 13th & 14th June 2011 (with registration and wine reception on the evening of the 12th of June).
The Child Language Seminar is an interdisciplinary conference with a long tradition which attracts a diverse international audience of, among others, psychologists, linguists and speech and language therapists, and provides a forum for research on language acquisition in all its diversity
