The procedure is the same for all of the age range specialisms: Primary or Secondary.
Except in exceptional circumstances a 2.2 degree or higher is required by students starting the course. In the case of modern foreign languages, secondary applicants should have spent a year abroad, as part of their degree. In the case of English with Drama secondary applicants should ensure that their degree includes at least 50% English Literature, however applicants with a drama based degree or with a Masters in English Literature should contact the university tutor for more information
Please also note that applicants are expected to have some experience of the English school system before application - usually through recent school observation visits, or voluntary or paid work in schools.
All applications made through GTTR are considered by course tutors, in order to select candidates for interview. Our interviews consist of a presentation by each applicant, a group task (secondary applicants only), a written task and an individual interview. The selection panel will be made up of course tutors and partnership school teachers. Under Teacher Development Agency regulations we are unable to offer places on our PGCE courses without personal interviews.
Applications are processed through a central clearing house and should be submitted from September in the year prior to entry. The closing date for primary PGCE applications is 1 December. There is no other closing date for all other PGCE courses though early application is advised. You will be interviewed in Newcastle before the offer of a place can be made. A £19 application fee is required. Applications should be made on line at http://www.gttr.ac.uk. Application packs are also available from:
