Doctorate in Educational Psychology, DEd.Psy

60 months part time (can be completed in 48 months)

This course is aimed at qualified practicing educational psychologists who would like to complete a CPD doctorate in a supportive environment.

We invite you to consider the opportunities  offered by taking a DEdPsy.  Its aims - an innovative, specialist and conceptually demanding further qualification for educational psychologists.  It seeks to develop critical and conceptual understanding of the most recent developments in educational psychology, as well as high-level practice by integrating recent developments in issues and research into everyday educational psychology activities. 

Why take the DEdPsy?  There may be positive career benefits, changes in career and promotion being among them. As the profession moves towards doctorate training, more and more qualified EPs will be looking towards the DEdPsy.  Many of our EPs are taking the course for intrinsic enjoyment and challenge.

Course Structure

5 modules:  2 in Advanced Current Issues in Educational Psychology, 3 in research methodology appropriate to educational psychology practice. 

Advanced Current Issues courses, on key topics, also offered as CPD to non-doctorate students.  Recent topics include: effective teaching/ effective learning; organisational psychology; consulting with schools, peers, students and parents; cognitive education; and socio-cultural psychology and activity systems. 

Each course involves 3-5 days attendance at the University of Newcastle (approximately 8 days per year).  Development of peer-support in year group through student led seminars.

Entry requirements:

You require an MSc in Educational Psychology, or an equivalent qualification recognized by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Applicants whose first language is not English should have a minimum of IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575 or equivalent.
