ICET

M Ed (Information, Communication and Entertainment Technologies)

Pathway Leader: Professor Sugata Mitra

12 months full time.

Introduction

ICET includes networking, multimedia, searching and referencing over the Internet, social networking and remote presence, amongst others. Most of these technologies have evolved through their use for entertainment. In this pathway, we include entertainment as a major factor in the development and use of new technology.

The nature of teaching and learning in a highly connected environment is rapidly changing. Learners are increasingly relying on each other and the Internet for their learning and metacognition resources. Teachers need to understand their role in such an environment. They also need to know how to use ICET effectively for achieving their objectives.

Who is this pathway for?

This pathway will be useful for all teachers. Through developing a knowledge of this subject (ICET), teaching skills will be strengthened and employability will improve in forward looking institutions. The pathway will also be of interest to people with an IT background who are keen on developing and/or supporting educational solutions.

Pathway Description

The ICET pathway will address the following issues:

  • What ICET technologies exist today?
  • Where are they headed?
  • What do learners, and young people in general, use ICET for?
  • How can teachers use ICET?
  • Instructional design for ICET environments
  • Self organised learning and its uses
  • Evaluation and ICET
  • Future learning environments

The pathway is highly interactive and hands-on and puts to practice many of the ideas as listed above. There are introductory modules from computer science for those who need to understand the technology in more detail. It is not expected that students taking this pathway need to know any of the technology, although some general understanding will help.

Compulsory modules:

Plus 20 or 40 credits from the following modules:

Pathway Optional Modules

For 2009/10, all candidates shall select modules (not already selected) from the optional modules list, so as to bring their total credits up to 180.
