Speech and language therapy (SLT) to help children with CP develop control of movements for speech has frequently been described in texts for students and clinicians, but has not been evaluated. From focus groups, it seems that in the UK speech language therapists (SLTs) may provide therapy to remediate speech disorders, but are unsure of the type or intensity of therapy to offer (Pennington, in preparation). This study examines if intensive SLT that concentrates on teaching children how to produce slower and louder speech may aid their intelligibility. It will refine the intervention to be tested in a definitive trial and define the characteristics of children for whom the intervention may be suitable; for example children with or without learning difficulties, children with moderate or severe speech impairment.
